Humbled and Exalted

“He who is conscious of his insignificance before his Maker, and in comparison with his Maker, is thereby exalted to a height that can be reached in no other way….Our feeble, finite, created nature is never clothed with such dignity, as when we are showing reverence to our Sovereign.”
-W.G.T. Shedd, from his Sermons to the Spiritual Man, p.262

God Reigns

God Reigns is a logical sequence from God is….A God, who neither sees, nor hears, nor knows, nor cares, nor helps, nor saves, is a vanity, and can never claim homage from intelligent men.  Such a god should be derided, not worshipped….Nothing more derogatory to the character of God can possibly be said, than that He does not rule the world.”

-William Plumer, from his book, “Jehovah Jireh, A Treatise on Providence”, p.10-11

Faith and Unbelief

“As obedience is the effect of faith, so is disobedience of infidelity; and as faith comes by hearing the Word of God, so infidelity, by listening to the words of the devil. From the deception of the mind proceeded the depravation of the will, the intemperance of the appetites, and the defection of the whole man”.

If the Lord Wills…

“Let us, then, learn to say in all the circumstances of life: “If the Lord will we shall live, and do this, or that”. It is a lesson slowly learned by proud and selfish man. Oftentimes it must be beaten into him by repeated blows from a severe yet kind Providence”.
-W.G.T. Shedd, from his Sermons to the Spiritual Man”. p.128
